Long wait for home ending soon (revival of Teluk Air Tawar housing project)

Long wait for home ending soon

BUTTERWORTH:

SOME 37 families have had to contend with staying in tiny container homes for 17 years, after being forced to stay there while waiting for their low-cost homes to be completed.

The long wait will soon be over as the housing project in Teluk Ayer Tawar, here, that had been abandoned since 1996 is expected to be completed by next June.

One of the purchasers, Lim Min Siang, 50, said he had planned to live in his unit with his late mother, two elder brothers and a younger brother. However, his wish will never come true as they passed away few years ago.

"I bought my unit and had planned to stay in it with my wife and four of my family members. That dream is in tatters now," he said.

"We had been waiting 17 years for the unit to be completed, during which time my four family members passed away. Now they would never have a chance to stay in a comfortable place with me."

Nevertheless, it was still a relief for Lim to know that he and his wife, Chew Sing, 35, would be able to move out of the containers from next June.

Meanwhile, another purchaser N. Balamy, 50, said he and his family could not wait to move as the tiny container that they have been calling their home had too little space for 14 of them.

"We have been living in cramped conditions all this while. It is too small and we feel hot staying in this container home. We hope we can move in as soon as possible as we have been suffering for 17 years. We have had enough," he said.

Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai said the project was delayed following the 1996 economic downturn. He said the developer, Blue Wagon Sdn Bhd, faced financial problems and was forced to stop the project. Blue Wagon then provided the containers to the purchasers to be used as temporary housing.

Blue Wagon managing director Datuk Tean Kok Png confirmed that the seven-storey low-cost housing project would be completed by next June at the latest and the owners would be able to move in after that.
